The Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria has been detected in a limited number of tins of the Prémilait 1er age baby milk produced by Premibio, the Hygenia Ltd. company announced on Friday. As a result, Hygiena, in agreement with the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain, AFSCA, has decided to withdraw the product from the market.
The bacteria was detected in the 900-gramme tin of organic Premilait for infants aged 0 to 6 months, bearing batch number 257 with an expiry date of 14/09/2020. It has thus been withdrawn from the market.
Cronobacter sakazakii can cause foodborne infections in babies. This type of contamination is very rare, Hygiena stresses, but it can cause severe illness and even death in newborns and premature babies in hospitals.
Anyone who has purchased this milk is asked to take it back to the store from which it was bought, where he/she will be reimbursed.
Premilait is distributed in Belgium in stores specializing in organic products and in pharmacies. If the milk has already been given to an infant, Hygiena recommends consulting a doctor and informing him/her that it was consumed.
