The wildlife health monitoring network in Wallonia on Friday confirmed three new cases of African swine fever found in dead wild boars. The boars were found close to the six cases already registered in the south of Luxembourg Province, the Office of Wallonia’s Agriculture Minister, Réné Collin, indicated.
This brings to nine the number of boars infected with African swine fever that have been found dead since 13 September.
The minister received representatives of the pig farmers on Thursday. To ensure close monitoring and supervision, he asked the College of Producers to set up a hotline to be used exclusively by the farmers. They can call 0470/84.18.67 for any questions about risks and measures to be taken.
The College of Producers has also designated a contact person for the 58 farms located in the 63,000-hectare infection area designated by the authorities.
"The objective is to have an evolving, individualized register of all farms so as to better monitor them while advising them on the strategic choices that will have to be made in the coming weeks,” the minister’s spokesman, Pierre Wilquet, explained.
Minister Collin reaffirmed, for his part, that “no farmer will be left out”.
