Hundreds of overly polluting police vehicles in Brussels and Antwerp

One Federal Police Service vehicle in six is too polluting to be used in Brussels and Antwerp since the two cities have imposed low emission zones (LEZ), preventing the most polluting vehicles from entering their territory, La dernière heureHet Laatste Nieuws and De Morgen reported Monday. The highly polluting Federal Police vehicles and vans are on a “white list’’ which exempts them from the 150 and 350 euros fines, respectively in Antwerp and Brussels. According to the Federal Police, 550 over polluting vehicles may circulate in Brussels, and 250 in Antwerp.

Meanwhile, the Federal Police says to be committed to purchase in the future cleaner vehicles, running on regular gasoline, or hybrid. Florent Platteeuw, of the police union SLFP, says it is a “real shame”: "The State requires citizens to pollute less, but does nothing about its own vehicles."
