Police violence in Mortsel - eight officers on trial

On Thursday, eight officers from Antwerp Police’s Special Intervention Unit (BBT), the area commissioner, the area director at the time and a psychiatrist from the Alexian Brothers Centre were sent for trial before the magistrate's court by Antwerp Indictments Division, a move that is part of the case relating to the death of Jonathan Jacob. Jonathan Jacob was under the influence of amphetamines when he was arrested on January 6th, 2010. A psychiatric facility later refused to commit him because of his aggressive behaviour. He ended up in a Mortsel police prison cell. The BBT was called there to restrain him so a doctor could give him an injection. The young man died shortly afterwards.
