The police have never given out so many fines for driving offenses

The police have never given out as many fines for driving offenses as last year, when 4,8 million on-spot fines were handed out. That’s 180,000 more than the year before, an increase of 4%, the Mediahuis newspapers reported on Monday. The number of serious offenses has gone up the most. The most common offense in Belgium is speeding. The police have given out 3,1 million (an increase of 6%) speeding fines over the past year. Speeding is followed by illegal parking and using mobile phones at the wheel.

Two offenses stood out in 2013. Drivers weren’t buckling their seatbelts or buckling their children properly in their cars: 99,683 fines for these offenses were given out (an increase of 16%). Police also noticed a large increase in the number of drivers under the influence of drugs (3,342 fines, an increase of 31%).
