Acid attack at Delhaize group: several people called in for questioning

Several people were taken in for questioning last weekend, either as witnesses or as potential suspects in the investigation of last Friday’s acid attack on a female cleaner in Antwerp. Some are still being questioned. Some are still being questioned. After a description of the wanted alleged aggressor was issued, several searches were carried out in various places in the country, according to the public prosecutor in Brussels on Monday. To preserve the integrity of the investigation the prosecutor neither denied nor confirmed the trails suggested in the media, amongst others, the possibility that the aggressor might already be known to authorities. The prosecutor’s office says that the investigation is on-going and new elements will be revealed when it reaches a conclusion.

Federal police received several calls over the weekend, following the wanted notice for the alleged attacker, and various trails are being explored.

Last December, a wanted notice for this same alleged aggressor was issued by federal police investigating another case. According to the federal prosecutor, the man had been blackmailing Delhaize for months in order to extract money from the group. Pictures published at the time showed the man in a bank in Lindebeek but also in Brussels. The pictures were then taken off the federal police website which explained the man had been identified.

According to the federal prosecutor, this information is incorrect. In January the federal police broadcast the same pictures on its website. Last Friday they revealed that the perpetrator seen was also the alleged suspect of the acid attack in Antwerp that same morning.
