A third of thieves in Belgium use a false identity, says VTM, based on a new study by federal police. This process mainly concerns organised groups from Eastern Europe, according to Eddy De Raedt from the organised crime unit. The study was done with 2,500 thieves, who had all been arrested. It turned out 30%, a little less than a third, use false identities. In Romania, Albania or Serbia, false papers cost 10 to 15 euros, according to VTM. Criminals are therefore buying them more and more.
According to Eddy De Raedt, this phenomenon means that police have to work with fingerprints more and more to work out the suspect’s true identity.
