Police violence in Mortsel – The psychiatrist and Director appeal

Both the psychiatrist and the former Director of the Broeders Alexianen centre in Boechout (Antwerp province) have opposed their default sentence of 6 months in prison, suspended. They were convicted of for criminal negligence in the death of Jonathon Jacob, the VRT reported on Thursday.

26 year old Jonathon Jacob died in January 2010, while being held in a cell at a police station in Mortsel. He had been brought in by a special law enforcement unit. The young man was under the influence of amphetamines when he was arrested. The psychiatric centre refused to take him, as he was being aggressive.

In its ruling, the Antwerp tribunal said the Broeders Alexianen centre should have taken Mr Jacob in.

Along with the psychiatrist and the director, the tribunal sentenced officers from the special assistance unit (BBT, Bizjondere Bijstandsteam) to four months in prison suspended and a 275 euro fine.
