The justice department does not know how many murders it has solved

The Belgian justice department does not know how many murders it has solved over the last few years. “This once again shows how bad crime figures are here”, the criminologist Brice De Ruyver said to Het Laaste Nieuws and De Morgen on Monday. The lack of concrete figures came up when federal MP Els Van Hoof (Christian Democrats) asked for the figures for 2010-2015 (solved and unsolved cases). The Prosecutors contacted by the Justice Minister Koen Geens (Christian Democrats) told him they didn’t have any figures. “That doesn’t surprise me”, says the criminologist Brice De Ruyver. “The Prosecutors don’t manage their cases well”.

The lack of figures has no immediate effect on those in the field, but experts say it could cause problems when reviewing penal policies.
