The summary jurisdiction in Liège demanded that the Belgian government improve prison conditions for a suspect under special treatment for being a suspected terrorist, on Tuesday afternoon. If it does not immediately comply, the government will pay a daily fine of 500 euros per day until it does.
Karim O., a 39-year-old Liège resident suspected of terrorism, appealed against degrading treatment since he started being closely monitored first at the Lantin prison, then at the Huy prison. The man is accused of fighting in Syria for seven days in 2013, and of being a member of a terrorist cell; he is being held in pre-trial detention.
He was the object of an international arrest warrant and was first arrested in Spain last July whilst on his way to Algeria, before being transferred to Belgium.
He is suspected of participation in terrorist activities after a photo was found showing him parading with a weapon. His attorney claims this is the only evidence against him and that it was taken in Algeria not in Syria.
