A man armed with a machete arrested in the Carré area of Liège

An individual armed with a machete was arrested in the Carré area of Liège on Sunday. He was then transferred to the Prosecutor’s office. Several streets were evacuated, but not because of the armed suspect’s arrest, Liège police said at the end of the afternoon.

Liège police got a call at 6.20am on Sunday, as a man in possession of a machete was walking around the Carré area. When officers arrived, a bouncer pointed out the individual. He was in possession of a machete and an airgun. The man was arrested and taken into custody.

A few minutes later, several fights broke out, but not because of the arrest. This required Liège police to intervene. They evacuated rue Tête de bœuf and rue Pot d’Or, where just two establishments were still open. “The closure of the two Carré streets has nothing to do with an individual in possession of a machete being arrested”, stated Liège police. This is contrary to what judicial sources had said on Sunday morning.

After the suspect was arrested, he was transferred to the Prosecutor’s office, and sent before an investigating judge. This judge requested he be placed under arrest.
