Shooting in Brussels: at least one suspect still at large

One individual has been taken before the examining judge and at least another perpetrator is still sought Tuesday. This follows the incident which took place Sunday night at 23:15 when shots were fired on rue de la Philanthropie in Brussels, stated the Prosecutor’s Office of that city.

The Prosecutor’s Office is however for the moment not in a position to confirm or deny information provided by the La Dernière Heure (DH) daily concerning the freeing of a suspect. The latter’s lawyer, Thibaut Colin, stated nonetheless that his client was freed Monday evening, but that the examining judge has reserved the possibility of charging him according to progress in the investigation.

DH also mentioned that a suspect being searched for has prior Belgian and European arrest warrants issued against him. The examining judge has not yet made a statement on this point.

As a recap, two young men aged 17 and 24 were injured by bullets. One of these has serious injuries in his arm and right buttock. Neither of the two’s lives are in danger. The Brussels Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a case for attempted murder and has ordered several investigative procedures. The clash is between two groups of youth.

The Prosecutor’s Office stated Monday that two presumed perpetrators were identified, taken in for questioning and detained. A search in the act of the violation was also carried out in the location from which one of the suspects emerged, where police found narcotics and material for the sale of drugs.

DH stated that these elements were found in the basement of the mentioned building and not at the home of the suspect, but that the latter is known by police.
