Local police units want electroshock weapons as an integral part of their basic equipment

If it were up to the local police units, electroshock pistols (“Tasers”) would soon be basic equipment for all agents. On its part, the Interior SPF is examining under what circumstances the use of such weapons is possible, and should have a clearer idea by the end of the year, as reported by the Flemish chain VTM Wednesday night.

With electroshock weapons, the muscles of the body are temporarily paralyzed by the shock. The request of police agents that such devices be part of their basic equipment comes following several shooting incidents in which suspects were hit by a bullet but were not knocked out, thus continuing to pose a threat.

Unless a vital organ is hit, neutralizing a suspect by shooting him is difficult. “With Tasers, it can be done directly. This is why we are asking for such equipment,” explained Nicholas Paelinck, Commanding Officer of the Westkust police unit.

The interior SPF stated on its part that it will study this request and will await the opinion of the police weapons commission by the end of the year in order to make a definitive decision on the matter.
