In the investigation initiated due to an alleged sexual assault committed by a staff member against a prisoner at Saint-Gilles, the suspect has been conditionally freed, although he still faces charges, announced the Prosecutor’s Office of Brussels. A man was arrested Wednesday morning in the sphere of the investigation and was interrogated by the examining judge. The suspect worked as a trainee at the Saint-Gilles Prison. Based on the information available, it is an isolated case.

Police declared having received a report on the case Tuesday from prison management. The man accused was then indicted. The General Directorate of Penitentiaries (DG EPI) confirmed that an incident had taken place this week between a staff member and a prisoner at Saint-Gilles.

“The DG EPI is taking this matter of sexual assault very seriously,” was the statement made in a communiqué. The DG EPI also stated that they will cooperate as needed and will take all necessary measures.
