Attack at St-Gilles prison – a female warden punched in the face and back

A warden at Saint-Gilles prison was attacked after her shift on Friday evening, Midi police (which cover Saint-Gilles, Anderlecht and Forest) told the Belga agency. An individual punched her several times in the face before fleeing. They have not yet been identified.  The Brussels Prosecutor’s office has said the victim was also punched in the back while she was on the ground. She is injured, but her life is not in danger.

The attack happened in front of the prison, just before Friday’s night shift started.

The attacker, who has not yet been identified, arrived and left on foot.

An unknown cyclist helped the warden after the attack. The Prosecutor’s office wants this person to come forward as they may be an important witness.

A warrant has been issued for the attacker. Their motive remains unclear. The Prosecutor’s office has added that it is not yet possible to know whether there is a link between the victim’s job and the attack.

Staff at Saint-Gilles prison are working minimum service until 6am on Monday because of the attack.
