Police violence in Mortsel – the convicted officer’s appeal rejected by the cassation court

There will be no new trial regarding the death of Jonathan Jacob. The cassation court has rejected the appeal submitted by some of the convicted officers, VRT revealed on Friday evening.

Jonathan Jacob, who was 26 at the time of the incident, died in a cell inside the Mortsel police station in early 2010. He was put there after the psychiatric centre refused to take him in. A special assistance team from the local Antwerp police was called in as reinforcements to immobilise him. He was under the influence of amphetamines and they wanted a doctor to sedate him. The victim was beaten during the incident, and later died of an internal haemorrhage.

Seven members of an Antwerp police special assistance team, the former director and the psychiatrist from the Boechout psychiatric institute were convicted by the Appeal court in February.

Six members of the special team submitted an appeal to the cassation court.
