Police will review the profiles of volunteers at festivals

The profiles of volunteers attending music festivals this summer will be reviewed in advance. A demand to this effect has been issued by the Ministry of Interior, but the organisers want to take it further by checking all the volunteers, reported the newspapers of the Mediahuis group on Thursday.

Minister Jan Jambon sent a memorandum to the organisers of music festivals in the aftermath of the attacks in Paris and Brussels. Volunteers in charge of supervision had to be screened by the local police.

The Pukkelpop, the Graspop or the Werchter music festivals decided to do more. Their organisers sent the names of all volunteers to the local police in advance, including e.g. information on people behind beverage stands.

A spokesman said the decision to review all volunteers was made at the local level. "The memorandum did not require it, but if a risk analysis requires it, the police and the local administration are of course free to extend the screening to all the employees."
