Terror suspect nabbed in wave of house searches

A terror suspect was held on Monday in a wave of house searches conducted by the police anti-terror unit in the Brussels region, according to reports published in La Libre Belgique and La Dernière Heure and confirmed by the federal Office of the Public Prosecutor (OPP). The two dailies reported that the arrested man was Samir El Yaakoubi. This was confirmed by a legal source, but the OPP refused to divulge the name of the suspect until after the investigating judge decided on his fate, which he was expected to do on Tuesday.

The suspect was arrested in one of five searches conducted in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. The remaining searches were carried out in Jette, Asse and Anderlecht. The OPP explained that they focused on a group of combattants who had left for Syria in 2014 and were aimed, among other things, at arresting the suspect, who had returned to Belgium.

The police anti-terror unit, the DR3, began the searches early Monday morning.
