New from 1/1/2018: Law on transsexuality amended

The law of 10 May 2007 on transsexuality, regarding the mention of sex changes in identification documents and their effects, has been amended this year in line with Belgium’s international human rights obligations. The amended text takes effect on the 1st of January 2018.

It eliminates the compulsory condition of sterilization and resolves the matter of the filiation links of a transgender person after a sex change. It also eliminates medical conditions from the name-change procedure, and the possibility for any interested person to oppose a sex change on a birth certificate.

Finally, it includes a number of guarantees against fraud and thoughtless sex changes.
