Weapons of war discovered during search in Laeken

The Organized Crime section of the Federal Judicial Police in Brussels found 12 weapons of war, including a Kalashnikov, and Ingram automatic pistol and a hunting rifle, along with ammunition, during a search conducted on Friday in an apartment in Laeken (Brussels), the police announced. The occupant of the apartment tried to escape, but was quickly nabbed. A second person who had a handgun in his possession, was also apprehended. Both individuals are known to the justice authorities and will appear before the investigating judge in Brussels.

Two other individuals illegally staying in the country were found in the same apartment building and have been transferred to the Immigration Office, which will look into their situation.

A ballistic investigation will be conducted to ascertain whether the weapons may have been used to commit criminal acts in the past, the Federal Police explained.

The search was conducted as part of the Canal Plan set up by the Federal Government to fight radicalism and terrorism in seven Brussels communes and in Vilvoorde.
