Women passed the 50% mark in the judiciary many months ago and now comprise 54% of all magistrates, La Libre Belgique newspaper reported on Tuesday, based on statistics from Justice Minister Koen Geens. Women were still in the minority, 49%, in 2012.
They now represent 59% of magistrates in labour tribunals, 61% in lower courts, 54% in commercial courts and 69% in sentence enforcement courts.
However, they are in the minority in appeal courts, higher labour courts and appeal courts.
The daily recalls that much progress has been made: women were only authorized to become lawyers in 1922 and had to wait until 1948 to be able to become magistrates.
