Migrant crisis: Private company to guard parking lots at night

Interior Minister Jan Jambon (New Flemish Alliance, N-VA) has announced three measures to be implemented shortly against people trafficking in humans and “transit migration”, Het Laatste Nieuws and La Dernière Heure dailies reported on Monday. Under the first measure, a private company will secure five highway parking places with guards and dogs from sunset to sunrise. Pending the designation of the company, the police will carry out this surveillance from Monday night. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the Grand-Bigard and De Jabbeke parking areas are sure to be among those concerned.

Federal and local police will also conduct checks each day in train stations, along highways and at the Port of Zeebrugge. These flexible, unannounced checks “will last as long as necessary”.

Finally, the working group on human trafficking, in which all security and judicial services are represented, will meet next week to discuss the issue of transit migrants. Information on traffickers’ networks will be exchanged to enable a more targeted approach.
