Number of tickets issued to security guards rises by 40%

The number of tickets issued to employees of private guard companies has increased by 40% in three years, VRT NWS reported on Monday, based on data from the Private Security Control Cell of the Home Affairs Department. Last year, 973 tickets were issued to security guards.

Belgium has about 20,000 security guards, each of whom must carry an identification badge. However, this is often not the case.

The three most common misdemeanours the guards commit include lack of integrity in searching personal effects, such as bags. Other violations relate, for example, to body searches. These must be done by a guard of the same sex as the person searched; they must also be done discreetly, not in a public place.
