Belgium has asked the Turkish Government to hand over a Belgian combatant captured in Syria and sentenced to 10 years in prison in Turkey, the Office of the Public Prosecutor said on Friday, confirming a report in Het Belang van Limburg newspaper. The woman, 28-year-old Amina Ghezzal from Beringen, Limburg, was convicted of belonging to the Islamic State terror group. She had left Belgium in October 2013 to join her then partner in Syria. However, he lost his life while Amina was pregnant.
In January 2018, the woman was arrested in Turkey with her new husband, a Syrian imam, after deciding to flee the Islamic State, for which she had worked as a translator, according to her version of events.
A court in Kayseri, Central Turkey, condemned her to 10 years in prison, while her husband received a prison term of about three years for helping a terrorist organization.
