Disciplinary sanctions imposed on 531 police officers in 2017

Some 531 disciplinary sanctions were imposed on members of the police in 2017, according to the annual report of the Integrated Police Disciplinary Council, quoted on Friday by La Dernière Heure. There were 179 heavy sanctions and 352 light ones, the daily reported.

In 2016, 578 police officers had been sanctioned.

The most frequent offence in 2017 was irregular use of data bases, in both French- and Dutch-speaking regions, according to the daily.

In French-speaking regions, other frequent transgressions were delays in processing judicial cases, abuse of alcohol prior to going on duty, refusal or failure to compile the required administrative dossiers and forgery and falsification.

In Flanders, police were often sanctioned for poor reception of accused persons and complainants at stations, failure to comply with the obligation to give evidence, and inadequate compliance with the obligation of reserve, particularly on social media.

The disciplinary council also warned that the disparities between precincts was too great, explaining that disciplinary sanctions were more frequent in big areas than in smaller ones.
