Human Rights League calls for inquiry into alleged police violence

Belgium’s Human Rights League (LDH) has called for a quick, independent evaluation of the police in the Brussels commune of Saint-Gilles after the RTBF reported on suspected police violence there, based on a report by the Children’s Rights Office, DGDE. "Most young people made allegations of physical and verbal violence and denounced systematic and arbitrary identity checks,” according to the report quoted by RTBF, which said no-one had filed any complaints.

The report, the LDH said, confirmed a situation to which it had been alerted many months ago by area residents.

The League said an independent investigation into the allegations was indispensable. It also said it supported the DGDE’s recommendations and called for an audit of the police in Saint-Gilles by an independent research body.
