UZ Leuven Doctor prosecuted for implant scam

A surgeon from Leuven University Hospital is being prosecuted for having put in place non-compliant implants for years, De Tijd reveals on Saturday. The facts were brought to light by a West Flanders Prosecutor’s criminal investigation. According to De Tijd, the investigation is closed, and the surgeon, along with the implants’ supplier, will be prosecuted.

The number of affected patients is not known. Some sources suggest from 50 to 100, while others imply a higher number.

Neither the surgeon nor the company, based in Bruges, have wished to respond. The hospital said that the doctor "left the structure in 2011, that a judicial procedure is underway in which the university hospital is involved as a witness."
