Brussels hotels get their stars back

If they wish to do so, the capital’s officially registered hotels will soon be allowed to display the number of stars to which they are entitled, and thus indicate their hotel’s official level of comfort. Brussels Parliament unanimously gave its green light Friday on a draft order that will allow the government to define the parameters of a future classification of this type. The Greens and the PTB abstained.

This non-obligatory classification will be a market indicator for the operator. The tourist accommodation establishment may obtain recognition of its level of comfort if it meets the set of classification criteria yet to be determined by the Brussels government by decree.

The Brussels government decided to retain the "Hotelstars 2015" classification criteria grid, established by the Hotelstars Union, an umbrella organization that groups hotels, restaurants, and cafes in Europe. Flanders and Wallonia have already joined. The evaluation will be carried out by the administration.

One of the ordinance’s objectives is to quickly offer to operators of tourist accommodation facilities that are registered under the category "hotel" the ability to obtain - once again – “star ranking”. It was no longer possible since the latest state reform and the transfer of tourism to the Region.

One of the consequences is that 184 establishments classified under the COCOF — as for a dozen Flemish registered establishments — have not been controlled since 2014, and recent hotels do not benefit from any ranking. The stars will be awarded to registered hotel at a date specified in the implementation decree, which will be sent to the State Council for review next week, Minister-President Rudi Vervoort said Friday.

It is noted that the order covers, not only hotels, but also other types such as aparthotels, residences, camping .... but not Airbnb.
