The centre for equality against discrimination (UNIA) has opened a file following an incident of racial slurs targeted towards Belgian police at a courthouse hearing in Charleroi last 6 December. During the hearing, the man, who had been charged for beating his own mother a few days earlier, shouted racial insults towards the police who were present. These included ”you will never understand anything with your white brains” and “dirty whites”, La Dernière Heure reported on Friday.
Prosecutors have asked for a two years prison sentence. The defense has meanwhile pleaded for leniency given the lack of concrete evidence in the file. “The prosecution has been focused on the circumstances rather than the facts, and we only have the testimony of the mother and prosecutor which states that the injuries are incompatible with a fall caused by alcohol, but the injuries show a compatibility with the version declared by my client.”, the accused man’s lawyer stated.
The final verdict of the case will be announced on 16 May.
