Charleroi Airport: Smuggler caught having swallowed 50 capsules with cocaine

Jenny O., 28, a native of Nigeria, appeared before the Criminal Court of Charleroi for attempting to smuggle 687 grams of cocaine into Poland. The accused had been intercepted at Charleroi airport. In February 2019, Belgian judicial authorities were informed by their Italian counterparts that a man was transporting ingested drugs.

Intercepted at Charleroi airport en route for Poland, the man did not deny the facts: "I was in Amsterdam on business. A man made me the proposition to carry drugs to Poland and to be paid 600 euros. With the financial problems I had, I agreed but I did not know what was in the capsules." In total, the accused had swallowed fifty plastic capsules containing cocaine.

Public Prosecutor Vervaeren does not believe the version of the accused: "He mentions financial problems but says he went to Amsterdam on a business trip. He confirms he does not know the people but nevertheless accepts the proposal. He isn’t Pablo Escobar, but he was perfectly aware of what he was doing."

Jenny O.’s Defence Counsel Drab evokes the deep regret of a man in a stable family situation. "My client is married with two children, unknown to justice and regrets what he did. He is not a criminal." The final verdict will be on 23 May.
