The UN decrees an International Yoga Day on the 21st of June

The United Nations has decided that the 21st of June will be International Yoga Day, an initiative by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on this, inviting member states to use this day to “discover the benefits of practicing yoga”.

Mr Modi nominated a Yoga Minister last month during a reshuffle of the Indian government to help bring back this ancient practice.

The nationalist Hindu leader is a strict vegetarian and a yoga fan, which he practices daily. He asked the UN to envisage an International Yoga Day back in September.

On his Twitter account, Mr Modi said he was “enchanted” by this decision. “I do not have words strong enough to express my joy”, he added.
