Immigration: Francken requests the revision of the list of safe countries

The State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration Theo Franken (N-VA, New Flemish Alliance) has addressed a letter to Dirk Van Den Bulckof, the General Commissioner for Refugees and Expatriated persons. In this letter, Francken asks him to add to the list of countries considered “safe”. Requests from asylum seekers from Armenia, Moldova, Senegal, Cameroun, and Tunisia should now be dealt with within 15 days, De Morgen said on Monday. Currently, requests from asylum seekers from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, India, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia are fast-tracked – which makes the checks less effective, according to critics. This was due to their country of origin being considered “safe”, meaning there is a small number of legitimate requests.

Using this new protocol, the requests are dealt within 15 days rather than the 3 months with the original one. Asylum seekers must also provide proof and elements that clearly show that their county is not safe for them.
