Belgium’s Federal Government decided on Friday to break off immediately its convention with Saudi Arabia on the Great Mosque of Brussels. This is in keeping with a recommendation of the commission of inquiry into the terrorist attacks that aims to end the involvement of foreign states in the teaching of Islam in Belgium.
The decision provides for a one-year transition period that will be used to establish a new structure associating the Executive of Muslims in Belgium and a local community that is to be set up. The new structure will manage the mosque and be in charge of training imams.
