Brussels residents have voted in 48,8% female candidates in the 2018 communal elections. Women are in majority in eight communes; Auderghem, Ganshore, Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Uccle, Watermael-Boitsfort, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.
A total of 339 women won a seat in Sunday’s elections, which represents 48,8% of elected officials. This is a new record at this level of power. In previous elections the figures were 41,5% (2012) and 42,2% (2006).
With 20 seats out of a total of 31 (64,5%), allocated to female candidates, the commune of Auderghem obtained the most elected female candidates. In contrast, Saint-Josse-Ten-Noode, is the commune dominated mostly by men (34,5% female candidates winning seats).
The capital will also have at least one female mayor in the commune of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean. Negotiations are still taking place elsewhere.
