Despite the election victory of the far-right, anti-Walloon party Vlaams Belang in Knokke-Heist, the mayor of the coast municipality Léopold Lippens assured Belgian francophones that they are still welcome.

"Regardless of the composition of the next Flemish and Federal Government, holidays in Knokke-Heist remain a unique experience," said Leopold Lippens according to Le Soir. "My French-speaking friends from Wallonia and Brussels can sleep soundly, we are happy to welcome them all year round," he added.

The far-right Vlaams Belang party won the elections of 26 May in a landslide victory. "Francophones are wondering if they are still welcome," said the mayor of Knokke. "Whether you are French, Dutch, Swiss or Italian: all visitors are equally important and our restaurants, bars and shops will do everything to make our guests feel at home," he added.
