Flanders is the European region with the highest density of solar panels, with 189.7 kW of panels installed per 1,000 km2. Flanders figures therefore comes even way ahead than Germany, which has an installed capacity of 111.1 kW per km2, according to a report published on Thursday by the i-Cleantech Vlaanderen non-profit association.
"With 38 kW of solar installations per 100 inhabitants, we are in second place in Europe,” the report added. “We’ve even surpassed sunny Italy (31kw). Only Germany is doing better with 59 kW per 100 inhabitants.”
Flanders’ performance in wind energy is less impressive, with 50kW of installed power per 1000 km2, corresponding to sixth place in Europe. This figure does not include offshore windmills, which fall under the federal government.
And where electric cars are concerned, i-Cleantech Vlaanderen reports that there are 756 charge stations in Belgium with 2.066 sockets, which is equivalent to the European average.
