Belgium’s new scientific research vessel, planned to replace the RV Belgica after 35 years of loyal service, will be called Belgica 2, Minister in charge of Science Policy Sophie Wilmès (MR-Reformed Movement) announced Thursday to the students who had suggested the name.
The federal government decided to build a new research vessel in succession of the RV Belgica in 2016.
The design contract has been given to the Spanish Freire Shipyard. The construction will begin 8 June for 28 months. The reception of the ship is scheduled for late 2020 for a total cost of 54 million euros (including VAT).
