The champagne industry is forecasting record sales in 2021, thanks to the replenishment of stocks after months of health crisis and demand from individuals, the industry said on Friday.

Despite this optimism, the industry remains concerned about the new Omicron variant, Belga News Agency reports.

“A fortnight ago, I would have told you that the outlook for the holidays was excellent, but now with the new variant, I think it will dampen our optimism,” Jean-Marie Barillère, co-president of the Comité interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC), told AFP.

Current predictions say that the industry’s 2021 turnover should exceed €5.5 billion for 315 million bottles, surpassing the record of €5 billion reached in 2019, explained Barillère, adding that a dual phenomenon of restocking by professionals and strong consumer demand and good export trends, particularly in Anglo-Saxon countries.

“The pandemic has led to new modes of consumption and everything linked to conviviality in the home, such as champagne, is experiencing a very positive trend,” he added.

While he is confident that the €5.5 billion mark will be exceeded, this figure is an estimate at this stage, ahead of the crucial end-of-year holiday period.
