A new European record was set this week in the Port of Antwerp for the most containers unloaded from a ship in one docking.
The MSC Allegra has been unloading about 23,500 containers there since Wednesday, reports VRT, setting a European transshipment record.
“It is a gigantic job,” Marc Beerlandt of shipping company MSC told Radio 2 Antwerp.
“The crane at the dock will need more than 15,000 movements to unload everything. It will take a good week to unload the containers on land. It could be done faster but there is a shortage of dockers. There are, of course, more ships to load and unload.”
The ship is currently moored at the Deurganck terminal of the port and is stopping here in Belgium on its way to Asia.
After the record unloading, the MSC Allegra will continue on to Singapore via Morocco.
