Nearly 1,000 businesses in Namur listed on a smartphone application

Nearly 1,000 businesses in Namur town centre are listed on a smartphone application, called “Namur commerces”. They are also listed in a free pocket guide available in tourist establishments, says Sylvie André from the association GAU Namur (Town centre management). This is the first application in Belgium to list businesses in a single town, according to research by GAU. On the free application, all businesses in the town centre can be geolocalised thanks to the search engine. They can be listed by name, street, or category. The association developed a database to make the application over the last few years. The businesses can also add a “News-Promo” that they have to pay for. This can be about a new collection, a promotion or an event. The application finances itself this way. This application makes businesses visible, and helps tourists and shoppers “improve their shopping experience and discover new businesses”.

“There is a real desire to help small businesses and freelancers, and help people discover other streets than just the main Fer-rue de l’Ange street”, says Sylvie André. This application presents “the commercial potential that already exists in Namur”. It will later show “other potential that will complement the first”, if the commercial centre project for the top of town goes through. This project, around 20,000 m², is currently being discussed by a Namur Conciliation committee, following a public consultation on the 8th of February.
