A Chinese company wants to make Zeebrugge a Gateway into Europe

On Wednesday, Belgian customs signed a declaration of intent with the Zebrugge port authorities and the Chinese investment company Xuanshu International in Peking. They want to make Zeebrugge a major Gateway into Europe for Chinese merchandise, the Finance SPF announced on Thursday. The project, called “China Gateway-Zeebrugge Trade Zone”, came up during King Philippe’s state visit to China. He was accompanied by three president Ministers. This State visit is to deal with economic issues.

The project involves Belgian customs fulfilling their role as facilitator, and innovative customs systems and procedures. They will of course remain within the law. “This project is very promising in lots of ways, including for the development of the Zeebrugge port. There should also be an increase in jobs at the port”, says the Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt. He was quoted in a press release.
