Belgian company Van Hool to deliver 30 trams to Belfast

Van Hool, a maker of buses, has signed a contract with North Ireland’s Department of Regional Development to make 30 hybrid Exqui.City “tram-buses” for the city of Belfast, revealed the company in a press release on Thursday. Delivery is expected for mid-2018.

Exqui.City models combine “bus flexibility with tram efficiency”, in order to make urban public transport “safe, green, efficient, as well as cheap,” says the company’s website.

This is the second time in two weeks that the Koningshooikt (Antwerp) firm receives a major order, as Austria ordered 20 electric trolleybuses a fortnight ago. The new order also marks the company’s first steps in the UK, where they have been asked to make vehicles with right-hand steering.

The vehicles will be made in Belgium, carry 106 people, and be equipped with a Wi-Fi connection.
