The Summer Sales get off to a slow start because of the bad weather

The Summer Sales got off to a slow start on Friday. Clothes and shoe shops saw their turnover go up by an average of 1 percent, compared to the first day of the July 2015 sales. This is according to the Neutral Union of Freelancers (Syndicat Neutre pour indépendants, SNI), who did a survey involving 200 shops. The SNI said the bad weather could explain this slow start.

“It’s disappointing”, says Christine Mattheeuws, the President of the SNI. “Shop keepers hoped that lots of people would have come to look for deals over the weekend”.

The SNI says clothes and shoe shops are optimistic about the Summer Sales: 46% think sales will increase during these sales and beat last year’s sales. 37% think sales won’t increase.

Currently, the average discount is 30%, but it can be as much as 40% in some shops, according to the SNI.
