Trump in Brussels - 15% less hotel bookings in the capital

Hotels in Brussels are clearly feeling the effects of the arrival of US President Donald Trump in the capital for a NATO summit on Thursday. According to Brussels Horeca, the number of bookings for the end of this week is 15% lower than normal, reports the editor of VRT on its website ( Many tourists and businessmen have postponed their trips, fearing that the city will be difficult to reach.

Normally, the occupancy rate of Brussels hotels is 75%. "This week, it is closer to around 60%," says Marc Van Muylders of Brussels Horeca. "It is also a relatively short week because, for many people, the weekend actually begins on Wednesday." The hotel association notes however that there are enough reservations for next Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the attacks, the weekend of Ascension Day last year had already resulted in lower figures. And in previous years, the week surrounding this holiday generally gave rise to overnight reservations that were 5% lower than normal.

The Brussels Hotel Association (BHA), for its part, confirms the decline but is not able to quantify it more precisely.
