BelOrta, Hoogstraten farm co-ops drop merger plans

Belgium’s two biggest fruit and vegetable cooperatives, Coöperatie Hoogstraten and BelOrta, have shelved their intention to merge. It was reported on Wednesday, at the start of the new strawberry season in Hoogstraten, that the two cooperatives decided that it was probably too soon to merge.
The two groups had announced plans to merge a year ago and their boards of directors had not opposed the move. However, they decided to interrupt their negotiations at the start of this year.
“We’ve decided to first continue working on several concrete projects. Who knows if that will not contribute to a new basis for exploring a close relationship once again”, Jan Engelen, head of marketing at BelOrta, explained.
