The Getlink (formerly Eurotunnel) group, which operates the Channel Tunnel, announced a drop in passenger and lorry traffic in May on Wednesday.
In May 2019, passenger shuttles carried 213,613 tourist vehicles, representing a decrease of 7% in comparison with May 2018. "An unfavourable calendar impact with the late Easter holidays coming in April, has resulted in a mechanical contraction of demand in May," Getlink analysed.
Lorry traffic was also in decline with 127,697 vehicles carried, a drop of 11% in a year. This followed "on from destocking activities by British firms in April and May, following stockpiling carried out during the first three months of the year" in view of a Brexit initially scheduled for March 29, the press release revealed.
Since January 1st 2019, more than 930,000 tourist vehicles and nearly 690,000 lorries have crossed the English Channel using the Shuttle.
Getlink would be publishing the traffic figures for June on Thursday July 11.
