Liège on target to become “Smart city” thanks to new technologies

This Friday, LiègeTogether presented projects in the field of new technologies currently implemented in the region as part of a campaign to be nominated “Smart city”. “Promoting technologies is essential to the development of a smart metropolis,” said Walloon Minister-President Paul Magnette, at a seminar organised in the Belgian pavilion of the Milan 2015 World Exhibition. “Liège is located at the centre of the ‘magic square’ (Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, and London), an area with 100 million residents and numerous research centres, universities, and airports, and as such it is extremely well connected,” highlighted Liège alderman Willy Demeyer.

Four technology projects were unveiled on Friday: an innovative solution to save on public lighting (SmartNodes), a fun app to make public transport more pleasant in every-day life (Nextride), a platform offering tech services following the “Smart city” philosophy (Win), and a lab which applies 3D printing to projects within the food industry (Smart Gastronomy Lab). The Smart City Institute was also launched early this year to foster research, training, innovation, and entrepreneurship for “Smart cities.”

Thanks to cooperation between authorities, businesses, investors, academia, and cultural actors, working together to support the Liège application for the 2017 World Fair, “LiègeTogether” in Milan this Friday aims to promote the metropolis internationally. The structure is “an amalgam of talents and skills to find partners for Liège,” as defined by its director general Jean-Christophe Peterkenne.
