Free mobile internet to be tested this autumn

An offer of free internet over weekends will be tested in Belgium in October, revealed Alexander De Croo (Open Vld), Minister of Digital Agenda and Telecoms at the presentation of the 2015 Information Society Barometer on Thursday. The data on internet use in Belgium shows that Belgians are bottom of the class when it comes to using mobile internet via a smartphone or a tablet. The minister and mobile operators are pondering whether to make mobile internet use free some weekends. “Many people would adopt mobile internet if they could test it without worrying about the price,” notes Alexander De Croo.

Just 57.5% of the Belgian population use mobile internet. Even though this is increasing, Belgium is doing about as well as Eastern European countries, compared to the better performance of its neighbours.

The minister thinks that growth can be found mostly through better communication about the offer and its advantages. The price, which was the main hurdle for his predecessor JohanVande Lanotte (sp.a), is now sufficiently competitive. “More competition resulted in lower prices,” explains Alexander De Croo. “There are contracts including mobile internet for 10 euros a month, although users are not always aware of that.” The surfmobile.be website  has information on the topic for the general public.
