Smartphone sales went down in Belgium in 2017, in keeping with a global trend, but appear to have stabilized this year, Le Soir reported on Friday. Touch-phone sales peaked in 2016, with more than 3 million units sold, before slowing down in 2017, when they totaled 2.8 million units, according to the daily.
In the first half of 2018, “1.35 million smartphones found buyers,” according to Jürgen De Mesmaecker, a consultant specialising in the new technology market at the GfK market research institute. This figure is similar to the volume of sales for the corresponding period of last year.
“The market has stagnated in volume … but not in value: the average price of a smartphone has increased by 10% and the upper segment of over 600 euros (…) accounts for 24% of the global market, as against 21% last year,” De Mesmaecker added. “Clearly, the consumer wants to pay more money for his/her mobile phone.”
