Six Belgians in ten willing to pay more for food from developing countries

Six Belgians in ten say they would be willing to pay more for food that comes from developing countries, to help the people that live there. This comes from a “eurostudy” done throughout the EU. This percentage is higher than the European average (49%). The European Union has made 2015 the year of development. According to the opinion poll, 67% of Europeans think development aid should be increased. Apart from Bulgarians, the majority of people asked agree, whichever country in the EU they come from.

Along with other Europeans, a large majority of Belgians (71%) think voluntary work with an organization is the most effective way to help developing countries. It ranks above official State aid (62%) and donations to organizations (59%).

In 2013, the EU and its member States gave 56.3 billion euros of aid, more than half of what is given worldwide.

The study involved 28,050 people, 1,003 of whom were Belgian.
